Customizing Your Word or Excel Toolbars

Microsoft Word and Excel provide the ability to customize your toolbar, in order to have icons for tasks which you commonly use.  In order to take advantage of these additional icons, follow these steps:

  • Click on Tools/Customize
  • Click on the commands tab
  • Click on a category that contains the command you would like an icon for
  • Scroll down the options at the right to find the command you need
  • Drag the icon to anywhere on your toolbar at the top of the screen
This icon will now be available for you at all times.  Some common icons you may want to add would be inserting page breaks, inserting or removing lines, summations in tables, cropping tool for editing pictures etc.

Spending a few minutes customizing your personal toolbars can save you valuable time finding those hard to locate commands that you use quite often.
